species: Allium genus - species unclear common name: flowering onion family: Amaryllidaceae where & when encountered: Old Westbury, NY - 2013
It is supposedly difficult to distinguish species of Allium - botanists guess that there are between 200 and 1000 species, but telling them apart is very difficult. What is clear is that this flowering form, the "Ambassador" cultivar, is striking to behold.
Striking, and funny, in a poodle sort of way.
