species: Casimiroa edulis
common name: white sapote
family: Rutaceae
where & when encountered: Mexico - 2005
This non-citrus member of the citrus family is native to Mexico and Central America, but apparently will grow in the Salinas Valley, where I encountered this healthy specimen producing fruit in 2012. Another name for this tree is Mexican apple. Confusingly, other trees taking the sapote name (e.g. mamey sapote) belong to the Sapotaceae family.
This tree is very confusing. And possibly confused.
